Learn about the FIRE Date

What is a FIRE Date?

Your FIRE date is the projected calendar date when your portfolio is large enough to cover your annual expenses indefinitely at your chosen safe withdrawal rate. It's the moment work becomes optional — calculated from today's portfolio, expected returns, and ongoing contributions.

How Investment Returns Affect the Timeline

Returns are the single biggest lever after savings rate. A 1% change in real return can shift your FIRE date by years — a 7% real return reaches FI roughly twice as fast as 4%. Plan with real (inflation-adjusted) returns so the date stays meaningful in today's dollars.

How Contributions Accelerate FI

Every dollar contributed early compounds the longest. Doubling monthly contributions doesn't just halve the gap — it usually cuts the timeline by 5–10 years because more capital starts earning returns sooner. Automate contributions and raise them with every income bump.

Why the FIRE Date is an Estimate

Markets don't return a smooth 7% every year — they zig-zag. Your real FIRE date will arrive earlier or later depending on the sequence of returns, inflation, and life events. Treat the date as a planning target, not a promise, and recalculate at least once a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the FIRE date calculator?

It's an estimate based on smooth, constant returns. Real markets are volatile, so your actual FIRE date may be 1–3+ years earlier or later than projected. The calculator is most accurate over long horizons and when you recalculate annually using updated portfolio and expense figures.

What real return should I use for FIRE projections?

A globally diversified stock portfolio has averaged around 7% real (after inflation) historically. Conservative plans use 5–6%, aggressive plans 7–8%. Avoid using nominal returns (like 10%) — they overstate purchasing power and pull your FIRE date forward unrealistically.

Can I reach FIRE faster than the calculator shows?

Yes — three levers compress the timeline: raise your savings rate (the biggest lever), lower your annual expenses (each $1k cut removes $25k from your FIRE number at 4% SWR), or extend high-earning years before stepping back. Side income that gets invested also accelerates the date dramatically.

Should I use a 4% or lower safe withdrawal rate?

4% is the historical benchmark for a 30-year retirement. For early retirement of 40+ years, many planners use 3.25–3.5% to add safety margin. A lower SWR increases your FIRE number and pushes the date back, but reduces sequence-of-returns risk substantially.

What if my FIRE date is later than my target retirement age?

The gap is actionable information. Close it by increasing monthly contributions, lowering annual expenses, raising your assumed return slightly (only if justified), or adjusting your target. Even small monthly increases compounded over 10–20 years can pull the date forward by several years.
